D-Day: A Day That Changed America: They Fought to Free Europe from Hitler's Tyranny Review

D-Day: A Day That Changed America: They Fought to Free Europe from Hitler's Tyranny
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If the first twenty minutes of Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" gives young students a graphic understanding of what it was like to storm the beaches at Normandy on June 6, 1944, then "D-Day: A Day That Changed America" will put the invasion of Hitler's Fortress Europe in perspective. After all, the sub-title of Shelley Tanaka's book is "They Fought to Free Europe from Hitler's Tyranny." Consequently, this illustrated volume, with paintings by David Craig, both explains why this was the turning point of World War II in Europe and how the small parts of the invasion that readers might have seen in "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers" fit into the big picture on D-Day (if you want the cinematic equivalent of what this book is trying to do then check out "The Longest Day," even though it is in black & white).
Tanaka tells the story of D-Day from the perspective of four eyewitnesses who survived the invasion: paratrooper Don Jakeway, fighter pilot Quentin Aanenson, seaman Bob Giguere, and combat medic Jack Fox. The order that we meet these four American soldiers allows the invasion to proceed chronologically. Young readers should appreciate the personal perspective of the story, which allows Tanaka to talk about what was happening with the entire invasion while also providing the intimate memories of her four soldiers, who were all in their eighties when they shared their stories. She makes it clear that not only was America changed by D-Day, but so where these four men. In addition to Craig's detailed paintings the text is complemented by historic photographs, pictorial maps, diagrams, and D-Day artifacts. There are also informative sidebars and features on topics like what the "D" in "D-Day" stands for and how the Allies fooled the enemy before and during the invasion. The result is a solid enough juvenile history of D-Day to provide young readers with a basic understanding of the invasion to build upon when they move on to more advanced works.
When I looked at the cover of this juvenile history of the Normandy Invasion I immediately agreed with the idea of this series and this particular example as "A Day That Changed America." After all, today is the third anniversary of 9/11 and the attack on the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon. There was a good indication of how much that particular day changed America in a new poll that reports over 70% of Americans believe the war against terrorism will never end. However, as much as those two days clearly fit the bill I have to say that the other volumes in the series are not as on point. After all, "Gettysburg" was a three-day battle, although Pickett's Charge on the third day is certainly considered the high-water mark of the Confederacy, "The Alamo" was a thirteen day siege and it was the Battle of San Jancinto that won Texas independence while having nothing to do with the United States until the republic was annexed, and the San Francisco "Earthquake!" did not really change much outside of the Bay Area in California. My point is that recognizing days in American history that truly changed the nation is a worthy effort and attention must be paid to what does and does not fit the bill.

God Reveals The Identity Of The Beast Review

God Reveals The Identity Of The Beast
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A fascinating if not widely read book. The author claims to have been given a revelation by God that the USA is the "Beast" empire of Revelation 13 and Daniel 7. Here are some points Mr. Fraley makes in his book:
* A "beast" by definition in the Bible is always a nation or empire, not a person. "The fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom on earth..." (Daniel 7:23)
* The four kingdoms or beasts in Daniel 7:3 were Babylon, Media-Persia, Greek under Alexander the Great, and finally the Roman Empire, according to Bible scholars.
* From the immigrant peoples of that ancient Roman Empire emerged the USA. "The ten horns are ten kings who shall arise from this kingdom." The author believes those kings were 10 countries in Europe, descendants of the Roman Empire. "And another shall rise after them; He shall be different and shall subdue three kings." Fraley believes when the USA defeated England, Spain, and France early on -- those were the three "kings" subdued in the prophecy.
* Satan is the "god of this world." Jesus was offered all the kingdoms of the world by "the ruler of this world" (John 14:30), who had the power to do just that. Fraley writes that Satan has given his "throne" or world dominion to the USA as the top nation: "the dragon (Satan) who gave authority to the beast." (Revelation 13:4)
* The "deadly wound" that the beast received by a "sword" (military attack) was Pearl Harbor. (Revelation 13:3, 14)
* The USA rapidly built up its military forces after Pearl Harbor and helped defeat Germany and its allies. The USA emerged unscathed on its home turf and the most powerful nation (militarily, industrially, economically) in the world, after WWII. The whole world admired this suddenly powerful nation: "And all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?" Fraley notes that "worship" means admiration and respect and awe.
Note: Jesus directly said that some super-religious people of his day followed Satan when they thought they worshiped God; they wanted to kill Jesus for saying that! (John 8:59) Jesus claimed the world in general does not know God. "O righteous Father! The world has not known you, but I have known you; and these have known that You sent Me." (John 17:25) So when the world worshiped the dragon, they worshiped the god of this world, according to Revelation.
* Fraley makes a painful point about many Christians in the USA: they esteem, admire, and love this country, nearly equating it with God. If you are critical of the USA and its policies "Christian-patriots" act as if you have blasphemed God Himself. They don't seem to take Jesus' words to heart: "My kingdom is not of this world." They also seem to ignore the first of the 10 commandments: "You shall have no other gods before Me."
* This beast nation or empire is given authority by Satan, the god of this world, "over every tribe, tongue, and nation." (Revelation 13:7) Other translations replace the word "authority" with power. The USA does not own or rule every nation and language and tribe, but it's influence is widespread. English is the second language of many nations. Our modern, materialistic culture has been adopted or often supplanted other nation's native cultures. Anything "American" is often the rage in smaller nations. We are the big kid on the block and many Americans are very proud of being number one in the world. Our leaders often state that it is our destiny or right to "lead the world." (It's worth noting that God hates pride and arrogance, and values humility: "To fear the Lord is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, evil behavior, and twisted speech." -Proverbs 8:13)
* Satan has two main traits: murder and deception (John 8:55). This nation has gone to war many times to enlarge its territory and political-military-economic dominance (Mexico, Central America, VietNam, Iraq). Read "A Peoples' History of the United States." Its leaders have often falsely justified those wars as "keeping the peace" or ousting a dangerous government or dictator. The CIA has been notorious for assassinations of foreign leaders and covert, illegal actions to undermine an established government at odds with the USA's own selfish purposes. President Bush and VP Cheney and their cronies lied their way into the ongoing war with Iraq, fooling Congress and the people of the USA. The ex-head of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, wrote that the reason for war with Iraq was very simple -- oil.
* Revelation 13:6 tells about the blasphemy of the beast. Fraley interprets that blasphemy as this nation's claim to be "under God" and doing God's will while often doing the opposite: war and conquest, deceiving its own people, generally working in its own self-interest while claiming to be a good-guy. The Bible says that Satan is the god of this world, while this nation claims to under the "God of Heaven." In reality it is under the intelligent yet subtle power and influence of an invisible "ruler of this world."
* Daniel 7:25 says this beast power shall persecute and wear out the saints. Fraley says Satan attacks Christianity at its center, which is the USA, with so many churches and so much world evangelism. The "prince of the power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2) weakens Christians via our American culture, according to Fraley, with materialism, constant entertainment, emphasis on money-success, and subtle contempt for Jesus and His teachings. It's not so much a direct attack on Christians but attitudes and prejudices "in the air." Christians get diverted from serving the God of Heaven ("I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit...so you will be my disciples" John 15:16,8) to serve their own self-interests or getting sidetracked (church for church's sake, endless Bible studies, campaigns against gays, religious TV). Then they wonder why they aren't very happy, with malaise settling in. (Some of this commmentary is my own and not the author's -Harlan)
Many Christians often wonder why the USA is not apparently mentioned in Bible prophecy since it has had such an impact on the world. The Bible says to not despise prophecies, yet it also says to "test the spirits" and "prove all things." There are some unresolved parts to the beast prophesy in Revelation 13 and Daniel 7, but Fraley's out-of-print book makes you wonder -- could it be true? Did God help him understand a shocking, surprising reality -- the USA is the feared beast power of Revelation and Daniel?

The Forgotten Generation: American Children and World War II

This book holds little for scholarly interest. There is virtually no primary research and little in the way of analysis. It lacks a thesis or argument of any kind. For casual readers who want anecdotal evidence about children during wartime it may provide a short primer.

Two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt addressed the nation by radio, saying, "We are all in it—all the way. Every single man, woman, and child is a partner in the most tremendous undertaking of our American history." So began a continuing theme of the World War II years: the challenges of wartime would not be borne by adults alone. Men, women, and children would all be involved in the work of war.

Ok, I am a huge Josh Hartnett fan, so why wouldn't I like to read a whole book about him? But it was very interesting and informative. And not to mention the many pictures! I got it a few months ago, but I still go back to my bookcase and reread parts of it. I'm just hoping that all the information is true!

A complete biography to date of one of Hollywood's hottest new stars, packed with full colour photos. What was his life like before he hit it big? What movies, books, and music inspired him? Who gave him his first break? Who turned him down? What does he have to say about his costars, including Ben Affleck? What does he have to say about the directors and big-time producers with whom he's worked? How does he handle being so famous? And what's next? Now you can get to know the real Josh Hartnett, the critically acclaimed actor and Hollywood heartthrob. Josh has been compared to Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Damon, and Freddie Prinze, Jr. - but he stands alone. And he still doesn't understand why girls find him so attractive ("I'm just a scrawny little thing").

7 December 1941: The Air Force Story Review

7 December 1941: The Air Force Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't know how many books there are on the attack on Pearl Harbor. All of them talk about the attack at Pearl on the Navy. All of them kind of add as an afterthought, 'Oh yeah, the Air Force got attacked as well.'
Yes the Air Force got attacked as well -- seven hundred of the casualties were Air Force.
This book was put together to tell their story. It first gives some background of the development of the bases, the activities going on at the time, about like what the books on Pearl have to say about Navy activities. Then it moves on to the attack itself.
All of the books talk about the radar site that picked up the incomming planes. It turns out that there were multiple radars that detected the incomming planes. But to no avail. The Air Warning system is described in some length. It was a pretty good plan. But on December 7th most of the little boxes had people in them. Much is made of the officer in the air defense center telling the radar operators not to worry about the blip on there screen. He was a 2nd Lt. He was a pilot assigned there as extra duty, it was only the second time he had been at the center. Would you really expect a 2nd John to wake up the General at 7 AM on Sunday Morning?
This is the Air Force's side of the battle. The result is no better, but it's a side of the story not often told.

The Nisei Soldier is a fascinating, fast moving account of major historical events. It is chronicled in such a way that one sees the faces of the protagonists and feels the psychological impact on them--ideal reading particularly for those interested in the contributions of the Nisei to our country's wars. I was a replacement with the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regiment. The Vosges Mountain campaign in France was my initiation into combat as an infantry-man. It was awful, with steel and tree splinters raining down on us--it was hell.

America's Wartime Scrapbook - Pearl Harbour to V-J Review

America's Wartime Scrapbook - Pearl Harbour to V-J
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the ninth of Robert Opie's Scrapbooks and the first using material not from his vast collection, appropriately this covers the US war years while his first book covered the British war years. An amazing 1500 items, mostly printed ephemera, from the collections of Charles Numark and Martin Jacobs are displayed in the still-life photo style that Opie created for his wonderful Scrapbooks.
The book opens out to spreads fifteen by twenty-one inches wide. Each one has a large themed still-life photo covering, Pearl Harbor, Home Front posters, ads, comics, greeting cards, magazine covers, movie posters, civil defence, V-mail, newspaper front pages, victory gardens, kids games, sweetheart jewelry, patches and medals, tobacco products, popular music sheets and more. It can get a bit overwhelming with so much material to look at but this is why I love these Scrapbooks, you can return to them again and again and still find something new.
Another book, 'United We Stand', with patriotic material from Richard Perry's wartime collection covers the same area but unfortunately it is rather badly organised and only has three hundred items but a book that will perfectly complement 'America's Wartime Scrapbook' is Stan Cohen's 'V for Victory', an exhaustive photo record of the Home Front. If you lived through the war years both these books will be instant nostalgia.

See WWII aircraft wrecks from all over the Pacific. If you are a fan of aviation, you will want to see this CD-ROM. It includes half American and half Japanese aircraft - both fighters and bombers, including some very well known types like the B-25 Mitchell and P-38 Lightning, and more unknown planes, of the Japanese, including the well know A6M "Zero" and G4M "Betty"
The connection to Pearl Harbor is with a Japanese A6M2 "Zero" that flew over Pearl Harbor, and was later shot down over Australia. In addition, it includes aircraft of aces, including Richard E. Smith, and other famous aircraft, like "Pug" Southerland's F-4F Wildcat - who shot down the first Japanese plane over Guadalcanal and also, the first U.S. aircraft loss over Guadalcanal - shot down by famed Japanese ace Saburo Sakai. Also, each includes full history, photos, video and WWII photos to accompany each profile.
If your interested in aircraft wrecks, history or just amazing images and video of aircraft wrecks left today in jungles around the world - this product is highly recommended!!!

Pacific Ghosts presents unique and astonishing history. Our team has found and documented many intact survivors of the Pacific war. Resting in swamps and jungles, the relics are silent aerial machines which more than half a century ago fought each other in tropical skies. Some are fully intact, others are not, but all have fascinating histories on how they fell, landed or were abandoned in their final resting place. Both American and Japanese aircraft are represented.Nowadays they are isolated and difficult to find, for this is why they are still undisturbed. Not only has our team tracked down the previously-undiscovered remnants of there historic aircraft, always under dangerous conditions, but they have subsequently employed world experts to research and meticulously define each and every history. You will not find such depth of aviation archaeology anywhere else. From the A-20 "Hell'n Pelican" that crashed landed after the 5th Air Forces infamous Black Sunday mission, to the wreckage of a Japanese Ki 43 Oscar from the Japanese Army's first and only raid against Guadalcanal, or the former P-38 Lightning of ace Richard E. Smith. "Pug" Southerland's F-4F Wildcat on Guadalcanal, victim of ace Saburo Sakai. This CD ROM's color video, color slides, WWII photos, live commentaries and documented histories are all testament to this. On A Blood Stained Sea Review

On A Blood Stained Sea
Average Reviews:

This book has an interesting premise that is not too unbelievable. It is a fast read that can be finished in a long evening. I enjoyed the battle scenes and the writing about naval life and issues. But, I agree with another reviewer that the subplot involving the girls was not only unbelievable as a concept, but the girls act and talk like ignorant and oversexed 13 year olds. The writing about the subplot was juvenile, and some of the non-battle dialogue among the crew was stagy, artificial, and stilted. Overall, though, an enjoyable book if you can get past the bad editing (how could that happen?) and the irrelevant subplot. I hope that this author keeps writing, but sticks to the military aspects of his stories. I was truly engaged and interested in the dilema of the officer in charge and in the battles against superior odds, which were handled very well. The best parts of this short book were reminiscent of Dale Brown's military aviation novels.

The Story of the USS Arizona (Cornerstones of Freedom) Review

The Story of the USS Arizona (Cornerstones of Freedom)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is really about the Japanese surprise attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941. There is significant mention about Japanese Admiral Yamamoto and his plans and misgivings about declaring war against the United States. Other than that, the main character is Tony Muncie, a crewman aboard the U. S. S. Arizona. When the ship explodes, he is thrown off the deck into the water and he manages to swim to shore. The remainder of the book is about the rescue efforts when the attack was over and the construction of the memorial to the Arizona.
Pearl Harbor was the greatest military defeat in the history of the United States, yet it was a victory. By uniting the country in a war effort, it galvanized the people of the United States into an effort that guaranteed victory. This book describes that momentous day when isolationism died along with over 2000 Americans. It is a well-told story of the most significant day of the twentieth century in American history.

Admiral Kimmel's story Review

Admiral Kimmel's story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Admiral Kimmel's Story was written in the first person allegedly by Rear Admiral Husband Edward Kimmel. (I suspect much of the book was actually written by Laurence F. Safford, USN.) Kimmel was the Pacific Fleet commander at Pearl Harbor from 1 February to 17 December 1941. Admiral Kimmel's Story - as with his Roberts Commission, Navy Court of Inquiry, Army Pearl Harbor Board, and Joint Congressional Committee testimony would have us believe that he was deprived of critical intelligence that had been available in the War and Navy Departments. (Funny, the same charge has been made about Lieutenant General Walter C. Short, the commanding general of the Hawaiian Department in 1941.) What Kimmel's Story, thousands of pages of testimony and most revisionist books haven't told their readers is that the same intelligence that was available in Ultra-Washington in 1941 was also available at the highest level on Oahu. I've been working on a book, to be titled CLOSING THE LOOP ON PEARL HARBOR since 1 March 1989. Until my book is published, read Robert B. Stinnett's DAY OF DECEIT: THE TRUTH ABOUT FDR & PEARL HARBOR.
I do not fault Admiral Kimmel or General Short or any of their key staff members. Neither do I fault the top brass in the War and Navy Departments---or President Roosevelt. We had to get into the Second World War. We had to do so with a unified people. For this reason, we had Pearl Harbor. (Battle loses are a given in any battle ever fought. You go into any battle and you know you will have losses. The losses we had on Oahu on 7 December 1941 were well worth their cost in what it did to unify our people.
If one must blame anyone for Pearl Harbor, put the blame on the 70 percent or so of the American people who wanted this country to stay out of "Hitler's war." No intelligent person can today say that "we shouldn't gave gone to war against Nazi Germany." Anyone who believes that must be himself/herself a nazi or must think we can achieve peace at any price.
By the way: Both the ComInt unit of the 14th Naval District and the 9th Signal Intelligence Unit of the Army (at Fort Shafter) had Purple machines in 1941. And don't let anyone tell you that we were not reading JN-25 in 1941. We were. Dates on the paper copies of the intercepts have been sanitzed. Our Government "sanitized" many documents such as the "war warnings" and the daily Com14 Communications Intelligence Summaries in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Ditto, many of the Magic intercepts published in JCC exhibits one and two.
Put Admiral Kimmel's Story in the same trash heap where Fuzzy Theobald's The Final Secret of Pearl Harbor: The Washington Contribution to the Japanese Attack belongs. Ditto, do the same with "AND I WAS THERE": Pearl Harbor and Midway - Breaking the Secrets. I can name many more titles on Pearl Harbor I'd recommend the same treatment with---unless someone wishes to see how a propaganda campaign is run. (The U.S. Navy & the U.S. Naval Institute have played a leading role in the coverup of Pearl Harbor over the years.)
Gordon W. Prange spent 37 years of his life researching Pearl Harbor. But remeber this: What is known as Prange's first book on Pearl Harbor, AT DAWN WE SLEPT: THE UNTOLD STORY OF PEARL HARBOR, was completed by two of his former students after Dr. Prange died. The editor was the same Bruce Lee who edited the so-called "Layton book" ("AND I WAS THERE") and actually wrote PEARL HARBOR: FINAL JUDGEMENT with the late Henry C. Clausen.
Perhaps someday someone will come along and really dig into how good our intelligence was on 9/11. That won't be me, however. CLOSING THE LOOP ON PEARL HARBOR - and all the research that has gone into it - will be my last involvement with anything that is (or can be considered) "a national security related topic."
Unfortunately, democracies are not perfect. The problem with any democracy is everyone can vote---but not everyone is well versed on many of the key issues of our time.
Pearl Harbor was for our greatest good. I'd have done what FDR and his ultras - including Admiral Kimmel & General Short did - if I were to go back in time. Spend your time reading Winston Churchill's THE GRAND ALLIANCE.
Kindest regards & Semper Fidelis,
Andrew (Andy) McKane IV
