Love and Honor Review

I highly recommend this book
I really looked forward to getting my copy of this book. I enjoy an author who believes in heroes and heroines. The story is enjoyable and conveys the sense of history and beliefs are country was founded on. The protagonist, Kieran is the kind of man of honor and integrity all men hope to be. The pitfalls, temptations, and struggles he goes through to accomplish his mission are outstanding. His belief in freedom overcomes tyranny and intrigue. His ideals help him to overcome adversity and achieve love and honor.
The plot is thick with action, romance, and conspiracies. The description of Catherine the Greats' Russia, during the late 1700's, is breathtaking and well researched. I felt as if I was in a horse drawn sleigh in the dead of winter around St Petersburg. The fight with wolves, Cossacks, and enemies of American independence are excellent. One of my favorite scenes is with the bagpipes - I will not give away any detail. I like how a man can achieve love and still keep his honor even when there is great opportunity to take short cuts to achieve his goals. I like how women can keep their dignity even when confronted with prejudice and hardship. This is an outstanding book about love and honor and the beginning attitude of our nation.

Silent Honor Review

This is a moving story about the unbelievable pain and prejudice faced by the Japanese in America during WWII. It tells about the life experiences of Hiroko, a Japanese girl, who arrives in America right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. It tells of her life detained in an internment camp and her life after she is released. It tells of her romance and losses. The story is fictional, but could be real... The historical backdrop is convincing and very realistic. It reveals many of the injustices imposed on the Japanese during this time. A powerful and thought-provoking novel.

Paul, Betty, And Pearl Review

Paul, Betty, And Pearl
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Paul, Betty, and Pearl" is a love story played out against the backdrop of World War II. The story begins with Lieutenant Paul Van Vliet's arrival in Hawaii a few months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Paul is with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. A single man, he is reunited with his sister Dottie, who has lived in Hawaii with her husband for several years. Through Dottie, Paul meets Betty, who is married to Naval officer Eric Lundstrom. At a party a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Paul and Betty realize they have a strong mutual attraction, and one thing leads to another, resulting in an adulterous relationship that lasts throughout the war. To say any more about the outcome of Paul and Betty's relationship would be a spoiler.
In the first few chapters, the story was somewhat reminiscent of James Jones' novel "From Here to Eternity," but that book ended shortly after Pearl Harbor. "Paul, Betty, and Pearl" covers the period from mid-1941 to early-1946. In most fictional WWII stories, the central character is a fighting man, either an infantryman, a flyer, or a sailor. Paul Van Vliet, however, is in the Army Signal Corps, which was tasked with such functions as battlefield telephone and radio communications, and radar warning of air attacks. It was interesting to me, a WWII junkie, to read about the role that the Signal Corps played in military operations. This is not a techno-war story, and the reader isn't buried in arcane technical details and jargon, but it was a nice departure from most war stories. In any case, the story focuses on Paul and Betty and the events around them, not the hardware.
"Peter, Paul, and Pearl" isn't the colossal soap opera that Herman Wouk's "War and Remembrance" was with its dozens of characters and action spanning the globe. It's a smaller, more intimate story that follows Paul's assignments in Hawaii, the U.S., North Africa, and Europe. Paul and Betty stay in touch with each other during the war, although they must be careful not to raise suspicions that would cause a scandal in that more decorous era. And Paul and Betty are not bad people, they're struggling to be honorable while at the same time being deeply in love with each other.
The major characters are finely drawn and well developed. Paul and Betty and their family members are real flesh-and-blood people with both strengths and weaknesses. Some of the characters are not always admirable, but there are no real villains, just ordinary people caught up in events beyond their control and trying to make the best of things. In telling their story, the author very skillfully recreates the wartime era with its customs, music, and language, which gives a realistic feel to his writing.
In the story, Paul is involved in the radar warning system that actually detected the Japanese planes approaching, but whose operators assumed that the planes were American B-17 bombers flying into Hawaii. In the aftermath of the attack, Paul and a number of ranking officers come under much scrutiny for the failure to alert the military forces on Hawaii. Combined with other issues like torpedo nets not being in place and watertight doors not being closed on the warships anchored in Pearl Harbor, historians have been debating for almost seventy years whether there was a political or military conspiracy to ensure that the attack was successful, thus forcing the U.S. into war. After the war ended in 1945, these allegations continued, leading to Congressional investigations as both political parties tried to smear each other with the blame. The author does a fine job of exploring the conspiracy theory and weaving it into his novel as an intriguing element of the story.
My only negative comment about "Peter, Paul, and Pearl" is that in a few sections, the formatting for the Kindle was off, leaving some lines of text very short. This was a bit distracting, but not enough to affect my enjoyment of the book.
"Peter, Paul, and Pearl" is the first book of a trilogy, and I'm definitely planning to read the other two novels. However, the book isn't one of those "to be continued" sagas where you have to keep reading the series to get any resolution to the story. It could easily be read as a standalone story, since it has a very satisfying ending that ties up all the loose ends.
The bottom line: Two thumbs up for some first rate historical fiction.

I just bought this book and it totally blew me away. Contrary to another review here, I find almost every page of this book to be extremely informative and jam-packed with information on the real attack and the making of the movie, with LOTS of movie photos and a lot of historical photos too. Also included are short bios of movie characters, quotes about the movie and the event from cast and crew, and storyboards and a timeline of the events of that day. I HIGHLY recommend this!

Why do I say I enjoyed the book guiltily? Well, cos' I went to watch the movie and I loved it, I guess i must be a hopeless romantic. But I stiil had to agree about the superficial aspects of the storyline. The war scenes were good but somehow reviews had taught me to beware of the love scenes. Ya right, I honestly liked that crap and that's why I feel guilty. But nevertheless read it only if you are a hopeless romantic like me. Really. don't bother wasting your time to read it and slam the book so disgustingly and give it 1 star and drag the whole rating down because there are still some people who swear by the book.

Dark Blue World (2001) Review

Dark Blue World (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm quickly realizing that there are some unbelievably good foreign films out there (I own about a half-dozen now). My wife and I watched Dark Blue World on DVD this weekend. It is one of the best epic war movies that I've ever seen and a very fine DVD release. The cinematography was amazing and the Dolby Digital mix was stunning. I felt as if there really were Spitfires and BF-109s flying through my living room!
In case you haven't heard of it, Dark Blue World is about Czech fighter pilots who fought for the RAF during World War II. In addition to an amazing history lesson, it was one of the best war screenplays I've ever seen and was wonderfully acted and directed. This is the first movie in a long, long time that I really felt connected to the characters. It makes me want to see more from this director and these actors. Jan Sverák should have been nominated for Best Director. Ondrej Vetchý (as Frantisek Sláma), Krystof Hádek (as Karel Vojtisek), and Tara Fitzgerald (as Susan) were all outstanding. It is rare that you see a movie so well balanced with stellar performances. Even the dog was perfectly cast (you'll know what I mean when the tears are rolling down your face as the main character has to leave her behind)!
Most of the movie is in Czech with English subtitles, which is refreshing. Hearing everything in the correct language sure does make the experience so much more fulfilling. It has the best aerial combat scenes in any film, ever. You'd think that you were seeing very high-quality historical film of the real thing. I'm a pilot and, as such, I'm extremely demanding in this area for accuracy down to the last detail. Let me tell you that the production staff for Dark Blue World didn't miss any detail. The combat sequences will take your breath away and really leave you with an appreciation for the sacrifices made by these pilots.
Even though I just saw it a couple of days ago, I'm gonna watch it again really soon. You won't be disappointed!!! I think that this film is the sleeper hit of 2001. It has my unqualified recommendation.

December 7th - The Pearl Harbor Story (2001) Review

December 7th - The Pearl Harbor Story (2001)
Average Reviews:

This DVD contains two documentaries. The first is John Ford's film about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I had mixed views about this film. I thought the original scenes from the attack were very interesting, and there were some scenes which I've never seen before. However, the scenes which included the plastic models were very poorly done. I realize this film was made over fifty years ago, but I was still disappointed with the poor use of the replicas of the American battleships. It was very easy to tell that they were not real.
The second documentary on this DVD was much better. It deals with the kamikaze attacks against the American fleet off Okinawa. The footage in this documentary is all actual. The viewer gets a true sense of what it was like to fight against an enemy fully intent on diving their plane into an American ship. The skies were literally full of anti-aircraft shells, yet the kamikazes kept on coming. Most never made it to their targets, but some did manage to break through, but thanks to the heroic efforts of the ships' crews, most of the ships were operational after the attack. However, some ships, such as the USS Franklin, suffered a much worse fate.
Overall,I gave this DVD 4 stars; the Pearl Harbor documentary gets 3, while the Okinawa documentary gets 5. Some parts of the Pearl Harbor documentary were very interesting, but I thought the poor use of the models greatly detracted from the overall quality of the film. On the other hand, the Okinawa film was excellent. The footage is all authentic, and the viewer gets a real sense of what it was like to be in a kamikaze attack.
I recommend this video highly. Both documentaries describe two important parts of World War II; one at the beginning of the war, and one at the end. Watch this video and see what it was like to fight the Japanese attackers at Pearl Harbor and survive a kamikaze attack in the waters off Okinawa.

This DVD was the best I could have bought. "Pearl Harbor the REAL STORY" tells it like it is. A very accurate account of what happened in Pearl Harbor. The interviews with the veterans are real with real tears. Scott Freund and Tim Csabanyi? These amatures made a top notch documentary Spielberg would have had trouble making. EXCELLENT!

Sure there have been remakes and remakes but this is one we can't get enough of, it pulls at heart-strings every time we see it not just for the romantic aspect of it but for the suddenness that this tragedy hit our country and it helps remind us of how ill-prepared we really were, and naive to boot.

The History Channel Presents Pearl Harbor Review

The History Channel Presents Pearl Harbor

This is a DVD set which is quite well done, but I find the packaging a bit misleading. There are three DVDs included, only one of which is specifically about Pearl Harbor, the other two are biographies of Douglas MacArthur and Chester Nimitz. Obviously these two figures are crucial to an understanding of the Pacific war, but are really tangential to Pearl Harbor. This was the sole reason that I deducted a star from the package.
The Pearl Harbor DVD is quite well done and combines historical and contemporary footage and interviews with some rather early generation computer graphics to produce a slick and powerful telling of the story of the Pearl Harbor attack and its context in history.
The biography of MacArthur is fascinating. I have always found MacArthur to be a brilliant but arrogant General, and this DVD reinforced that appraisal. This production helped me appreciate some of MacArthur's strengths more than I had before, but also helped me understand the psychological side of him which led to his aloofness and arrogance.
The Nimitz biography is wonderful. I have always regarded Nimitz as the greatest of the Pacific commanders. I think Halsey was the better battlefield commander, but Nimitz was an amazing motivator and organizer, and a great, compassionate man. This DVD made me appreciate Nimitz even more that I previously did, and I think anyone interested in naval history would love it.
In total, this is a very good production, with excellent use of archive and current footage and with insightful interviews. I think anyone interested in World War Two would be thrilled with this set, even if it isn't exclusively about Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor (Two-Disc 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition) (2001)
Average Reviews:

Why does Hollywood have to make a three hour movie about a terrible day in US history and turn it into 'As The World Turns'? I could not believe that I sat through this piece of junk. It was 2 1/2 hours of 'General Hospital' and 1/2 hour of reality. It's a shame that Hollywood feels that 99% of the films that come out today must contain some kind of soap opera setting to satisfy what they think the lady folks wish to see. I find that to be rather insulting to women and I am not a female. There is nothing romantic about December 7,1941. It gets 1 star for the actual attack sequence. I must mention that I highly doubt that while they flew over head, the Japanese pilots were signaling to the American children to take cover. Silliness. If you wish to see a great film on Pearl Harbor, seek out 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' and let this one rot.

History comes alive in the unforgettable epic motion picture PEARL HARBOR, the spectacular blockbuster brought to the screen by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Astounding visual and audio effects put you at the center of the event that changed the world -- that early Sunday morning in paradise when warplanes screamed across the peaceful skies of Pearl Harbor and jolted America into World War II. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnet (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY). PEARL HARBOR is extraordinary moviemaking -- a breathtaking reenactment of the "date which will live in infamy" and a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who lived it.
