Double-Edged Secrets: U.S. Naval Intelligence Operations in the Pacific During World War II (Bluejacket Books) Review

Double-Edged Secrets: U.S. Naval Intelligence Operations in the Pacific During World War II (Bluejacket Books)
Average Reviews:

Jasper Holmes could have chosen as his title the phrase his colleague Edwin T. Layton used for his memoirs: And I Was There: Pearl Harbor and Midway - Breaking the Secrets. As a USN reservist returned to active duty at Pearl Harbor just months before the attack, Holmes was there at the start of the war. And he remained near the center of naval intelligence activities in the Pacific until the end.
My bigggest criticism of this book has nothing to do (directly) with Holmes himself. Like many memoirs written in the decades immediately after the war, this book is limited by the fact that much of the information Holmes would otherwise have been able to share was still officially secret. It would be for later researchers to say what Holmes couldn't.
The other complaint I have is that, based on what I've read elsewhere, Holmes modestly understates the important role he played in the events he describes. It's to his credit that he's eager to praise talented and dedicated cryptologists and analysts. But Holmes frequently makes himself sound like someone standing on the sidelines watching the varsity team play. In fact, he was one of the team's key players.
What could be a highly technical memoir is leavened by a light tone and entertaining asides, like his tales of trying to drive through Honolulu with darkened headlights (a feat he describes as probably a greater danger to the citizens of Honolulu than the Japanese attack was).
Any student of the war in the Pacific, and particularly of Naval Intelligence operations or the attack on Pearl Harbor, will find this an interesting and entertaining memoir.

Humble Heroes: How the USS Nashville Fought WWII Review

Humble Heroes: How the USS Nashville Fought WWII

"HUMBLE HEROES" ....Truly Déjà vu, "all over again"
"HUMBLE HEROES" takes me back where as a young boy we sat close to the old Atwater Kent Radio in the evenings to catch every word of what was happening in the war, and where our uncles, cousins and friends were fighting and dying. On Saturdays we watched The MovieTone News at the local theater, from which our teachers in school would follow with a geography lesson tracing the battles of that awful time.
Through the eyes of the crew of the USS Nashville, "Humble Heroes" is not only a history of W.W.II, but also the strengths of these average "Joes" performing heroic feats, suffering unimaginable pain, and yet still being able to maintain a sense of humor.
Author Steve Bustin has captured the history, the agony, and the camaraderie of these "Humble Heroes" and their loved ones. Is it any wonder that Tom Brokaw called this "The Greatest Generation".

"Top Secret" mystery missions, many without other ships in support, were becoming uncomfortably familiar for the crew of the USS Nashville CL43.It started like a Hollywood thriller, secretly transporting from England $25 million in British gold bullion, delivered to the ship in unguarded bread trucks, a pre-war "Neutrality Patrol" that was really an unofficial hostile search for the far bigger and more powerful German battleship Prinz Eugen, and sneaking through the Panama Canal at night with the ship's name and hull number covered for secrecy. Now, with the ship bulging with an unusual load of fuel and supplies, in the company of a large fleet quietly passing under San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the crew was about to learn of their latest (but not last) and most improbable adventure yet as the captain made an announcement that would change the war and their lives forever, "We are going to Tokyo!".Over three years, scores of battles and hundreds of thousands of ocean miles later, the Nashville and her crew had earned 10 Battle Stars, served from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, from the Aleutians to the Yangtze River, as McArthur's flagship and suffered heavy casualties from a devastating kamikaze attack.Tokyo Rose reported her sunk, repeatedly.Earlier, with goodwill trips that included France, England, Scandinavia, Bermuda and Rio de Janeiro, the new, sleek Nashville built a pre-war reputation as a "glamour ship".But with war came the secret missions, capturing the second and third Japanese POWs of the war, having a torpedo pass just under the stern, being strafed and bombed by Japanese planes, losing a third of the crew in a single Kamikaze attack, swimming in shark infested waters protected by marines with machine guns, enjoying the beauty of Sydney and her people, planning a suicide mission to destroy the Japanese fishing fleet, and bombarding Japanese troops and airfields across the Pacific. The Nashville crew served their ship and country well. They came from Baltimore rowhouses, New York walk-ups, San Francisco flats, Kansas wheat farms, Colorado cattle ranches, Louisiana bayous and Maine fishing towns. Many had never traveled more than 25 miles from home and had never seen the ocean until they joined the service. They were part Irish, part Italian, part Polish and All-American.Battered, burnt and bombed, they made the USS Nashville their home and lived and died as eternal shipmates. This is the story of their beloved Nashville and their personal experiences.

I found this book to be entertaining and very readable. The plot moves along quite nicely, with just the right amount of "drag" on the good guys.
By drag I mean this, it is possible for the US to send its high-tech war machines against virtually any country and come out on top. This is due to the large amounts of money spent on the quality as opposed to quantity of weapons systems. Smart bombs, eyes in the sky, that sort of thing. This would make for a very dull book. So there is a spy, who we never get a good "read" on, who makes it his/her job to report on every move that is being made against Pakistan. The motives of this spy are not explored, but the spy does provide a nice counterpoint to the seeming invincibility of American firepower.
I will not go into whether or not Pakistani or Korean names are correct, as I do not know the facts of the discussion. However the idea that the gloves are off in the worldwide fight against all forms of terrorism is a good one. Fighting by Marquis of Queensbury rules while the other guy is beating you with a 2X4 is a great way to get dead in a hurry. This book shows that shooting first and not asking questions may be one way to go.
As far as not giving a full 5 stars, there was one technical detail that leapt out at me and ruined the perfect score. At one point Mr. Hagberg has a special ops team getting into AH-1W Super Cobras for a mission, 8 troops to a helicopter. A TWO SEAT helicopter. I had a mental image of troops hooked to hard points on the stubby wings for a bit. But that is my only complaint.
Go ahead and buy the book, its a good one.

From the first page to the last you will feel as if you are there at Pearl Harbor with Adam on the, "Date which will live in infamy!" December 7, 1941. Harry Mazer has crafted a story that can be read and enjoyed both by young adults and adults. The main character not only watches as the United States is pulled into WWII but he himself, a military brat, a Navy man's son, is pulled in many directions throughout this novel. Allow yourself a block of time to read this page turner! I read it in less than two hours. I was almost late for school because I couldn't put it down. Rating the book on a scale of 1 to 10 my sixth grade students and I rate it a 10! It's one of the best books we have ever read. In my book I think it's a future Newbery Award winner!

Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) Review

Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)

A suspensful, action packed drama, this film is one of my all time favorites. Performances by both Lancaster and Gable are right on the mark, they (especially Gable) had me believing they were actual naval officers. The scene where Lancaster relieves Gable of command is powerful, here we see two great actors at the peak of their skills. Gable's contempt towards Lancaster for the act is truly inspired (He virtually spits out his disgust here: "A fleet ship of the US Navy, with her fighting power intact, and your first command is to order a retreat", every time I watch this scene it gets better and better!). Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman recreate this scene in "Crimson Tide", but it doesn't match the intensity created by Lancaster and Gable in the scene from RSRD. One neat byproduct of this movie is that after watching it, you will have a pretty detailed understanding of what a WWII Balao class sub looks like, how the chain of command works, and what happens on a typical patrol - you will be educated and entertained at the same time, what a bargain! Nice supporting role by Don Rickles. A great, classic movie for sure, you won't be disappointed! END

"Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is a hard-driving, dedicated submarine officer with a single-mindedpurposeto seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sank his former ship. Given a new command, Richardson drills his men to the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. At last, word comes of the destroyer's position, and, disobeying orders, Richardson finally confronts his foe, unaware that an even greater enemy lurks nearby...one who's been targeting him for a watery grave.Co-starring Burt Lancaster as Gable's executive officer, this gripping WWII adventure-thriller set a new standard for submarine pictures. "Severely, nail-bitingly tense" (The New York Times), Run Silent, Run Deep is the most exciting film about the "silent service" ever made.

Wake Island (1942) Review

Wake Island (1942)
Average Reviews:

For those who haven't seen this film, the above line is spoken by William Bendix and refers to the constant Japanese naval and air bombardment of Wake Island that the U.S. Marines and civilians endured on the base. I have always been fascinated with "famous last stands" in American military history, and the story of Wake Island is one of the most famous.
This classic war movie, while over 60 years old, is still very meaningful and entertaining today. Yes, some of the historical details are missing, but the brave determination of the Wake Island garrison is wonderfully captured. Brian Donlevy, who was usually stuck in supporting roles, gets top billing this time and does a great job. And William Bendix, one of my favorite actors from this period, steals every scene he's in with his typical tough-guy-without-a-brain role!
Many will view the movie's portrayel of the Japanese as unfair and racist, but remember this movie was released only months after the attack on Pearl harbor. The special effects are obviously dated, but they are quite possibly the best from any 1940s war movie I've seen. The director did a good job of using authentic combat footage, except for the footage showing bi-planes(?!?).
Of course, with a war movie this old the usual cliches are present, but this movie was aimed at an America that cried for revenge. There are many scenes showing Americans dying, yet the eventual American defeat and especially the surrender of Wake Island are downplayed (the surrender isn't even included in the film). If you want to know the full story of Wake Island, there are several great books available. And if you love classic b & w war films, add this gem to your collection!

Pay very careful attention when trying to determine which disc you actually received from Amazon. There's conflicting information on the internet as far as the telltale signs of the remastered disc versus the original crappy transfer. For example, most people tell you the packaging for the new version has a yellow UPC....not always true. Other people tell you the copyright on the back bottom right of the box says 2010 DW Studios LLC instead of the original which says 2009, also not always true.
It seems the only definitive way to tell if you have the new version is to look at the innermost rings on the underside of Disc One itself. Hold it up to the light, and at the end of a string of letters and numbers, you should see "B1R2". If you have anything else (i.e. B1R1), you have the original version and NOT the remastered one!
If so, exchange it promptly.

The Final Countdown (1980) Review

The Final Countdown (1980)
Average Reviews:

This film is well written, has an all star cast and has wonderful photography. Filmed well before Top Gun, The Final Countdown has great areial combat/flight scenes and shows the awesome capabilites of the navy's modern nuclear aircraft carriers and the stressful environment that all aboard have to live with every day.
Kirk Douglass and Marten Sheen show why they were "A" list actors when this film was made. Both gave excellent performances.
The script was well written with the exploration of the ships crew trying to deal with a potential paradox that would effect every person on the planet.
Great acting a good story and super photography of aircraft carrier and flight operations. If you like these features, you will love this movie.

Why does Hollywood have to make a three hour movie about a terrible day in US history and turn it into 'As The World Turns'? I could not believe that I sat through this piece of junk. It was 2 1/2 hours of 'General Hospital' and 1/2 hour of reality. It's a shame that Hollywood feels that 99% of the films that come out today must contain some kind of soap opera setting to satisfy what they think the lady folks wish to see. I find that to be rather insulting to women and I am not a female. There is nothing romantic about December 7,1941. It gets 1 star for the actual attack sequence. I must mention that I highly doubt that while they flew over head, the Japanese pilots were signaling to the American children to take cover. Silliness. If you wish to see a great film on Pearl Harbor, seek out 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' and let this one rot.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) Review

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now that most people know "Pearl Harbor" is a combination of "Tora, Tora, Tora" and "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," this 1944 film directed by Mergyn LeRoy might get some renewed interest. Dalton Trumbo's screenplay is based on the book by Captain Ted. W. Lawson and Robert Considine, and it is Van Johnson as Lawson who is the main character in this film. Spencer Tracy's role as Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle is basically a supporting part, which, or course, Tracy nails. The film is an exciting and essentially faithful retelling of the famous air raid of Japan that was America's first significant payback for the raid on Pearl Harbor. The film not only has a documentary style, including actual footage of the B-25s taking off from the carrier Hornet, it also uses the real name of the raiders, which is a nice tribute to the members of the Doolittle Raid. Covering both the grueling training as well as the actual raid, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" has the deserved reputation of being one of the most accurate films produced during World War II about the actual war, winning the 1945 Oscar for Best Special Effects. The cast includes Robert Walker, Don DeFore, and a very young Robert Mitchum. If you prefer history to melodrama, then it might be worth your while to do a double-feature of "Tora, Tora, Tora" and "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" some weekend.
