Pearl Harbor - Two Hours That Changed the World

This is a truly well-done presentation of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Made for television, it is viewer friendly, not an academic, scholarly treatment that will lose all but the college-educated. This is not to say that the information is watered down or diluted. Rather, it is simply a well-orchestrated video story of Pearl Harbor, as told through the voices of those who lived it.
The video relies heavily on interviews of both Americans who were stationed there in Pearl, as well as (and this is especially powerful) a couple of the Japanese fighter pilots who dropped the bombs. It is a chronological piece, beginning with an overview of why we were in Pearl Harbor (an out-of-the-way post in paradise) and why the Japanese felt it necessary to bomb it. It ends with a the current state (1991) of Pearl Harbor, the memorial, and testimonies of survivors. The stories of survival and the manner in which the actual attack is presented is incredibly moving. The narration by David Brinkley throughout is well-done and fills in the gaps not covered by the interviewees. Includes actual footage as well as portions of Jack Ford's recreation film produced shortly after the attack to give it a greater visual appeal.
If you're looking for a powerful overview of Pearl Harbor that will keep you glued to your seat, look no further.

Pearl Harbor The Director's Cut 4 Disc Set Review

In 1940 as Hitler and his Nazis invade Europe, America refuses to join in the battle. Two military pilots named Danny (Josh Harnett) and Rafe (Ben Affeleck) have been good friends since they were kids fall for a sexy nurse named Eveylen (Kate Beckinsale) for Rafe seems to get the girl until he is called for duty in Europe, a month later after Rafe is assumed dead it's now Danny who falls for Evelyn. It seems he isn't dead at all but alive and a love triangle starts for now the Japanese have a plan to attack on Sunday December 7th 1941.
Co-starring Jon Voight as President Rooservelt, Alec Baldwin as Captain Doolittle, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Doris "Dorie" Miller, Mko as Admiral Yamamato, William Lee Scott as Billy and Dan Ackroyd as Captain Thurman this is an outstanding and underrated WWII action-drama from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Braveheart writer Randall Wallace and director Michael Bay. It's been criticized as a cliche mushy love story disguised as a war movie but it's not true, i believe it has the right ingredients of a successful blockbuster from all three filmmakers and really depicts WWII in a glorious fictional kind of manner. Who cares about accuracy and all that? i think he does a small bit of historical accuracy even on some casting like Cuba Gooding Jr. who made a damn good role of playing the first black American soldier to get the cross-medal and i love Hans Zimmer's brilliant score. The action sequences are well executed by one of the biggest hollywood action maestros Bay and it's a very well made movie that is a must see for everyone as i loved it since i saw it in theaters before my graduation for it's a sad, sometimes uplifting and dark War drama that even has a bit of humor.
This 4-Disc DVD set contains the Extended R-rated Director's Cut as intended by Bay but had to tone down some language and graphically gory violent scenes to get a PG-13 rating for everyone to see. There's awesome extras like three audio commentaries, Music video of the hit song "There You'll Be" by Faith Hill, Preview of National Geographic Beyond The Movie: Pearl Harbor, Journey to the Screen The Making of Pearl Harbor 47 minute featurette, teaser and trailer, super 8 montage, boot camp, video production diary, One Hour Over Tokyo 50 minute documentary, Unsung Heroes of Pearl Harbor 50 minute documentary, Oral History The Recollections of a Pearl Harbor nurse 3:36 minute featurette, interactive attack sequence which is a multi-angel multi-audio presentation at the look of the major sequence, animatic attack, Deconstrucing destruction: a conversation with Michael Bay and Eric Brevig, Photo gallery, Interactive timeline on the clashes of American and Japanese culture and DVD-Rom stuff.

December 7th - The Pearl Harbor Story (2001) Review

December 7th - The Pearl Harbor Story (2001)

This DVD contains two documentaries. The first is John Ford's film about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I had mixed views about this film. I thought the original scenes from the attack were very interesting, and there were some scenes which I've never seen before. However, the scenes which included the plastic models were very poorly done. I realize this film was made over fifty years ago, but I was still disappointed with the poor use of the replicas of the American battleships. It was very easy to tell that they were not real.
The second documentary on this DVD was much better. It deals with the kamikaze attacks against the American fleet off Okinawa. The footage in this documentary is all actual. The viewer gets a true sense of what it was like to fight against an enemy fully intent on diving their plane into an American ship. The skies were literally full of anti-aircraft shells, yet the kamikazes kept on coming. Most never made it to their targets, but some did manage to break through, but thanks to the heroic efforts of the ships' crews, most of the ships were operational after the attack. However, some ships, such as the USS Franklin, suffered a much worse fate.
Overall,I gave this DVD 4 stars; the Pearl Harbor documentary gets 3, while the Okinawa documentary gets 5. Some parts of the Pearl Harbor documentary were very interesting, but I thought the poor use of the models greatly detracted from the overall quality of the film. On the other hand, the Okinawa film was excellent. The footage is all authentic, and the viewer gets a real sense of what it was like to be in a kamikaze attack.
I recommend this video highly. Both documentaries describe two important parts of World War II; one at the beginning of the war, and one at the end. Watch this video and see what it was like to fight the Japanese attackers at Pearl Harbor and survive a kamikaze attack in the waters off Okinawa.

Pearl Harbor Payback/Appointment in Tokyo Review

Pearl Harbor Payback/Appointment in Tokyo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This GOODTIMES Pacific war documentary quadruple play has some technical flaws.
PEARL HARBOR PAYBACK (1945) is poorest of all: an overly dark picture and sound that includes external static and a constant 60 cycle hum (it's most noticeable over even the cheapest headphones). This is accompanied by two faint rollbars that move constantly from screen bottom to top. Original audio is mid-range only. According to IMDB, this documentary runs nearly an hour, yet here it's only 23 minutes.
The Ronald Reagan narrated two-reeler TARGET TOKYO (1945) has a nearly imperceptible hum and no visual distortion. A short labelled AIR WAR AGAINST JAPAN is visually clean but has bad audio, too heavily filtered (it's not listed at IMDB). APPOINTMENT IN TOKYO (1945) starts with clean full range audio and a decent picture. Sound deteriorates part way through and hiss increases, as if played through an audio tape head fouled with debris.
The most curious flaw is fairly brief. During an announcement of the Doolittle raid's success in "Pearl Harbor Attack," faint modern HiFi music can be heard about the movie. Its inclusion here seems accidental, perhaps a crossed circuit during mastering that caused bleed-in from another source.Content of main features--
PEARL HARBOR PAYBACK features dogfight footage of Gen. Chennault's Flying Tiger squadron. Flight crew trainees are seen, as is coverage of Jimmy Doolittle's mission to Tokyo that was launched from the deck of the USS Hornet. Because of an enemy air attack that sunk some support vessels, the Doolittle crews took off nearly twice as far from Japan as planned.
APPOINTMENT IN TOKYO tells in rapid fashion the entire Pacific air war story from homeland military production to the official Japanese surrender to Gen. MacArthur. Distributed by Warner Bros., combat footage from the Army Pictorial Service and Signal Corps is used. The Army Air Forces and the United States Navy also contributed to this project

At 3 hours long, this documentary gives a good overview of the buildup to war, the attack, and the aftermath. The footage is "average" but does include a few minutes of original color from Hawaii before the attack and of the attack itself. The narration is competently done and takes the standard views of history. There isn't much new. I'd give it three stars for content, but I gave it its fourth star because of the price. I've seen a other documentaries that cost much more but aren't much better.

Hiroshima / Pearl Harbor (2010)

The version of John Ford's docudrama DECEMBER 7TH offered on this ECHO BRIDGE (aka "Platinum Disc") WWII double feature is a heavily edited one (the original film runs about 80 minutes). Missing sections aren't vital to the early morning sneak attack central to the story.
Both that vintage picture and the main attraction are nicely dubbed. Unlike previous EBHE products, there's no on-screen watermarks to ignore or fret over.HIROSHIMA is a remarkable three hour TV movie that seamlessly combines vintage footage with artfully aged, color-reduced modern film to tell both the story of Harry Truman's first few months in office and that of Japanese General Anami and Emperor Hirohito.
Although the Japanese will surely be defeated, they fight on even in the face of an imminent full scale invasion and when warned of a new, deadly American weapon. Because of their intransigence on ending the war, in early August of '45 an atomic bomb immolates Hiroshima and causes widespread casualties. It takes the similar destruction of Nagasaki to finally motivate Hirohito to accept unconditional surrender. Truly one of the finest war biopics ever made. Highest possible recommendation.Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll ratings.

National Geographic's Ultimate WWII Collection (2001)

This video does an excellent job of telling the story of the Pearl Harbor Attack by using actual footage as well as testimonials of survivors. Again, National Geographic has solicited the help of Dr. Robert Ballard in hopes of finding a sunken Japanese midget submarine which tried to enter the harbor during the attack. Dr. Ballard has been featrued in other National Geographic videos dealing with the search for the U.S.S. Yorktown, the German Battleship Bismarck, and the ships of Ironbottom Sound. I own all of these other videos and I particularly enjoy Ballard's approach to finding sunken ships, so I was anxious to see how he would do in his search for the Japanese submarine. Survivors of the U.S.S. Ward, an American destroyer on patrol on December 7, 1941, are interviewed in this video. Their ship was the actual one which fired on and sank the sub that Ballard is searching for. I have always enjoyed the way that National Geographic has blended together the actual war footage along with the stories of the survivors, and this video keeps up the tradition. Perhaps my favorite part of this video was seeing the first images taken from inside the U.S.S. Arizona. It was really someting special to see. I would highly recommend this video to anyone who enjoys underwater adventures as well as Pearl Harbor readers/viewers.

Pearl Harbor - The View From Japan (2001) Review

Pearl Harbor - The View From Japan (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This seems to me a worth-while DVD; I don't regret buying it. It is somewhat mis-titled, for it actually briefly covers the entire ill-fated Pacific campaign. It has a strong focus on Admiral Yamamoto himself--his foresight and vision as a military leader, and his reluctance to enter into a fight with the U.S. It is interesting to hear a few words from the Japanese perspective, yet it seems that is all you get--a few words. There is little groundwork laid which might explain more fully Japan's reasons for attacking us. The DVD ends abruptly, with no final words of summary or mention of lessons learned. I suppose one can't blame them; they are, after all, reciting a long painful list of defeats which began only six months after the Pearl Harbor "turkey shoot". Nonetheless, though this overview is brief, it succeeds brilliantly, and makes fine use of map diagrams. One comes away with increased clarity about the scope of events in the war in the Pacific. The narration is dubbed over in English, and is outstanding. The DVD is very attractively packaged, using a semi-clear plastic case. Again, a worth-while purchase.

Why does Hollywood have to make a three hour movie about a terrible day in US history and turn it into 'As The World Turns'? I could not believe that I sat through this piece of junk. It was 2 1/2 hours of 'General Hospital' and 1/2 hour of reality. It's a shame that Hollywood feels that 99% of the films that come out today must contain some kind of soap opera setting to satisfy what they think the lady folks wish to see. I find that to be rather insulting to women and I am not a female. There is nothing romantic about December 7,1941. It gets 1 star for the actual attack sequence. I must mention that I highly doubt that while they flew over head, the Japanese pilots were signaling to the American children to take cover. Silliness. If you wish to see a great film on Pearl Harbor, seek out 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' and let this one rot.

The Patriot (Special Edition) (2000) Review

The Patriot (Special Edition) (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My review for the original version of "The Patriot" can be found under its respective title. This review is merely for those who may already own the movie and are wondering if it's worth buying a second time around for an additional 10 minutes of footage. For those who have never bought this title, then I can say emphatically to choose this version. For those who already own it . . . well . . . I suppose you'll need to read on and decide.
First of all (thank goodness), the extra 10 minutes of footage are not merely tacked on as "Deleted Scenes" at the end of the movie. In fact, it would be nearly impossible to do so since some of the extra footage is not found in separate scenes, but rather additional footage of already established scenes. In these situations, the extra footage may be as long as an additional minute or as little as a few seconds. How do I know? Well, for one, I'm a high school history teacher and show it every year during our unit on the Revolutionary War. Given that I teach five classes a day of the same subject, I'd say I've gotten quite familiar with the movie.
Now, one particular extension of a scene is quite riveting in that Benjamin Martin's youngest children get their first taste of the horrors of war prior to the death of Thomas. This comes just before the evening when Gabriel stumbles home after being wounded in a nearby battle. Something (the viewer is unaware) catches the attention of the Martin children and they stride over to a nearby creek/river to investigate. What they discover are the bodies of several soldiers floating downstream. Martin then comes over and ushers the children back into the house.
Another noteworthy scene extension is found in the "ambush" scene following the death of Thomas--you know, the famous "aim small, miss small" scene. Well, in the original edited version of the film we soon observe the infamous Tavington interviewing a dying witness of the event in a battlefield tent hospital. It is in this scene that the witness compares who we know as Benjamin Martin to a ghost. The problem is, as far as we knew, there were no survivors. We had to accept at face value that perhaps one must have escaped. In this version of the film we now know the facts! You see, after Martin does his bloody hack job on a would-be escapee, the camera pans in on one particular Redcoat as he lays wounded in a nearby swamp. We then get a peek at what he sees through his one dying eye: an eerie glimpse of Martin flitting through the dim light of the heavily-wooded forest. Then the camera focuses again on the bloodied face of this dying witness. It is not long thereafter that we discover that this poor chap actually survives (he's the one in the hospital tent).
One particular scene left off the original is the burial of Thomas. Although the scene is short, it nevertheless reiterates that Benjamin Martin has a tender, loving side (remember, a few scenes before he was hacking and slashing away at every Redcoat in sight).
Of particular note are the additional scenes involving Cornwallis and Tavington. Here, the viewer witnesses Cornwallis scolding Tavington in the presence of other officers --- the viewer should be delighted to see the arrogant and villainous Tavington being humiliated in front of others. In the scene, Cornwallis sarcastically remarks that Tavington has earned himself the nickname "The Butcher." This scene is important in that it helps establish and underscore the motive Tavington has for eliminating "The Ghost," Benjamin Martin. Further dialogue between the two is found later in the movie as well.
In short, the additional footage is not just added fluff. Indeed, the additional footage adds substance to every scene where it was originally found. Now, if the original version is a perennial favorite of yours, then by all means go out and get it. If, on the other hand, you may only watch it once in a blue moon then you could probably live without it.

This film is well written, has an all star cast and has wonderful photography. Filmed well before Top Gun, The Final Countdown has great areial combat/flight scenes and shows the awesome capabilites of the navy's modern nuclear aircraft carriers and the stressful environment that all aboard have to live with every day.
Kirk Douglass and Marten Sheen show why they were "A" list actors when this film was made. Both gave excellent performances.
The script was well written with the exploration of the ships crew trying to deal with a potential paradox that would effect every person on the planet.
Great acting a good story and super photography of aircraft carrier and flight operations. If you like these features, you will love this movie.

Armageddon (1998) Review

Armageddon (1998)
Average Reviews:

The Criterion Collection release of Armageddon is a treat. It offers 2 commentary tracks, one featuring the director Michael Bay, actors Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has comments on several interesting things. Affleck's commentary is sometimes very funny. The other commentary track features the Director of Photography and special effects people.
The commentary includes interesting details, including background information on the characters and filming locations. Note: The commentary is raw and sometimes laced with profanity, although the movie itself is rated PG-13, for reasons explained in the commentary.
Although it's not much, this collection is also a Director's Cut and has a couple scenes added, notable of which is Harry Stamper's character visiting his father before launch. Some other scenes are cut slightly differently, adding some depth to the story.
The Gag reel on the second disk is extremely funny, raw, and not your typical "behind-the-scenes" documentary.
The second disk also features a tremendous amount of information on the special effects and includes many different trailers and promo material. The Aerosmith song video is also included.
While the story can be nit-picked, it's still very exciting and enjoyable.
Overall, if you liked the movie, the Criterion Collection release is the DVD to have.
