I'm biased as I have liked everything P.T. Deutermann has published, however, Pacific Glory was Deutermann on steroids. The historical novel genre was a departure from his usual mystery adventures but he produced an historically accurate romance adventure that though a bit mushy at times was fast paced and included some of the most riveting combat scenes I've ever read. And here comes the ultimate compliment: Pacific Glory reminded me several times of Herman Wouk's WWII novels in the descriptive quality of the prose. I very much look forward to P.T. Deutermann's next book, and the one after that, etc. Bravo!

Aviation Engineers Avenging Pearl Harbor Review

Aviation Engineers Avenging Pearl Harbor

Who better to write a unit history then someone who honorably served in it during WWII. Author and Army veteran Bob George has preserved and captured the unit history of the old 864th Aviation Engineers in his book called "Aviation Engineers Avenging Pearl Harbor!". This book dispels the myth that all the work in the Pacific was done by just the Navy Seabees. It opens up the unknown history of those who served and what they did. I think the men of the 864th have much history to be proud of and George has certainly done this unit proud with all his detailed research which will allow future generations to have access to an important element of the war effort by the Army.
The book details the training and bases and the equipment and even the operations they were involved with but the strength of the book is the personal little stories about the men in the 864th that makes this a standout telling of history. George adds photos and documents to the back of the book along with orders and letters as well.
I would think that anyone who served as an Army engineer or has had a relative do so would love to read this story of this particular unit--which I think is representative of many such units in that war. The book is easy to read and it is refreshing to me that there is no profanity as I find in recent trend of telling of war stories--so it is family friendly and can be read at any library or class presentation.
The writing is organized well and the author does a creditable job presenting his old unit's history. I would think that those surviving members of his old unit will find this an excellent preservation of their story.

Day of Infamy : The Whole Story of Pearl Harbor Review

Day of Infamy : The Whole Story of Pearl Harbor
Average Reviews:

The full quote is "It is significant that despite the claims of air enthusiasts no battleship has yet been sunk by bombs."
Those telling words appeared next to a photograph of the USS Arizona at sea and were printed in a US Army-Navy pamphlet dated 29 November 1941.
Just 8 Days later the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in what President Roosevelt later called "This day of Infamy." During that attack the Arizona exploded and sank at her berth after receiving a direct hit from a Japanese bomb. Today the USS Arizona remains the permanent war grave for the 1,102 men who perished on board that ship that day.
My copy of this book was published in 1957. Since that time, many new avenues of research have opened for historians. One, of course, is the advent of the internet. Another is also the release of material after whatever 30 or 50 year rule were put in place. In other words, this author neither had the facilities afforded by the internet nor was he allowed access to some of the material which is available today - something which makes this book all the more remarkable for its content.
Author and historian Walter Lord clearly understood the art of research and put his skills to the best possible use in producing this book. It is an excellent work. With photographs used for the very first time, we have a moment-by-moment account of the attack and how it affected people on the ground.
This really was infamous for several reasons; Firstly the Japanese had not delivered any formal declaration of war against the USA. By not making such a declaration, US Forces had not been placed on a war footing and were, therefore, going about their duties - just as they would during any time of peace. Finally, not content with the knowledge they would be catching the US Fleet "unawares," the Japanese also chose to attack on a Sunday morning - a time when US forces would, for the most part, be enjoying a day off.
Infamy is one word, cowardly is another and, of all the accounts I have read, this ranks amongst the very best.

Stunning perspective from a man who researched his attacker. Stationed aboard the USS Tennessee, Boatman, put aside his rage after the war and found one of the pilots who bombed his ship. He tells of the paths both took in order that they make their appointment in the Pacific. Fascinating insight into the pre-war conditions in the US and Japan that ultimately ended up in war between the two countries.

My uncle Gary Gibson co-wrote this book with his best friend in the late 80's. Both men passed away in 2002 but it is amazing that their book is listed on Amazon. I am sure they would both be proud. I was just a kid when they were putting all of this info together, but I remember it vividly. My birthday is December 7th and my Uncle Gary always made sure to let me know about Pearl Harbor and what happened on my birthday many years earlier. He taught me respect and honor for the men who lost their lives that day and I am sure he would be glad to know that I was able to visit the pearl harbor memorial in Hawaii a few years ago. This book is packed with maps, info and pictures. if you are obsessed with the attack on pearl harbor, you should get this book.

War in the Pacific: Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay Review

War in the Pacific: Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay

On 7 December 1941 the United States of America was attacked without warning or provocation. That event was a direct attack on the American Fleet based at Pearl Harbor. It was, as the president later stated; "A day which will live in infamy," and so it does.
Unfortunately for the Japanese Navy, however, the US Aircraft Carriers were many miles away at sea and so remained unscathed. They were later to play the most vital role in the forthcoming war. It has often been said that had they also been at anchor in Pearl Harbor on that day, the outcome of the entire War in the Pacific might have been very different. Personally I take the view that the outcome would have been the same - only the time taken would have been much longer.
This author takes the reader from that catastrophic attack right through a catalogue of events to September 1945 when General Douglas MacArthur accepted the surrender of the Japanese. In so doing, Japan became the only nation in history to unconditionally surrender to a foreign power without one single foreign soldier ever having set foot on her homeland soil.
From the Appointment of Admiral Nimitz as he succeeded Admiral Kimmel (who was eventually held to blame for that Japanese attack which brought the USA into the war - although it is difficult to see what any other commander might have done bearing in mind the USA was not aware of any impending attack at the time), through conflict after conflict, almost island by island, this author does a most thorough job.- and tells the story very well indeed.
If you really want to know what the War in the Pacific was all about, this is an excellent choice.

PEARL HARBOR: Awakening a Sleeping Giant Review

PEARL HARBOR: Awakening a Sleeping Giant
Average Reviews:

Klobuchar's book is a fascinating, and often gripping, account of the Pearl Harbor attack. The book is based on personal interviews with dozens of survivors, and includes eyewitness accounts of many aspects of the attack, often in great detail. Many stories are told, also, of the heroes who did not survive, as told by their fellow servicemen. The book even includes personal accounts of the attack from several Japanese airmen and seamen, including those who later became American citizens.
While the focus is on individual human interest, Klobuchar also includes important overview information, gleaned from military statistics, about the ships and planes destroyed or damaged, and the total impact of the attack on the US Military.
All-in-all, the book is a good read, offering the rare combination of high readability and solid historical facts.
You don't have to be a military buff to enjoy this book. Anyone seeking a great understanding of the history of this crucial period in world history will appreciate the stories and facts contained in this worthy effort.

I just received my copy and was somewhat disappointed; while the author made a good effort at compiling lists of recipients, a diproportionate number of them are for Midway and the Philippines, which I believe were included maninly to flesh out the book.
The book is fairly comprehensive although I noted that the 11 Air Corps personnel who received Purple Hearts for merit (not wounds) were not included. Also, all those who received PH's for wounds, are not listed. I acknowledge, though, that it was a diffucult job to find all citations for the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Also, the Bronze Star Medal was described as being awarded for actions also involving aerial flight, which is wrong, but I'm quibbling.
This is a helpful reference for serious students and collectors of US military awards.

This source was invaluable to my research on Senator Arthur Vandenberg, a major figure in American politics of the 1930s and '40s, and also superbly discusses the role of the GOP as a distinct minority in Congress during this time.

Pearl Harbor: A Primary Source History (In Their Own Words) Review

Pearl Harbor: A Primary Source History (In Their Own Words)

World War II had been going on in Europe and the Pacific for two years by the time the war arrived right on the doorstep of Americans. President Franklin D. Roosevelt claimed it was "a date which will live in infamy." In the early morning hours on December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in the deaths of 3,500 people. The time for complacency had ended. War was declared on Japan, Germany and Italy. One unfortunate side effect of hysteria and patriotism was that 120,000 Japanese Americans were interned in "relocation camps where conditions were harsh."
The reader will receive a thorough grounding not only about the actual attack, but will learn about the history of what went on prior to the attack and also what happened after, up to current day Pearl Harbor. You will learn about the importance of Japanese rulers, their century of war with other countries, America's "pacific empire," Hitler's role in WWII, American Neutrality Acts, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's wartime policies, the AXIS, Yamamoto's plan to attack Pearl Harbor, how we knew about the attack in advance, a detailed description of the attack, our declaration of war, media depiction of the events, investigations into what happened and what Pearl Harbor is like today.
This book is based on several primary research sources. The "key to symbols" in the front of the book lets the student know where the information was drawn from. Sources include film excerpts, government documents, interview/book extracts, songs/poems, letters, newspaper articles, speeches, plaques/inscriptions and telegrams. These keys are also located along the bottom page edges for convenience. This is a very "busy," but marvelous resource for all students, from the reluctant reader to the confident one interested in American history. There are numerous sidebars, time lines and the book is peppered with photographs. In the back of the book there is an index and biographies of major figures accompanied by a photograph. This is an excellent stepping stone for any student attempting to write a report on Pearl Harbor!

Beyond Pearl Harbor Review

Clio Mathews Wetmore's balanced account of the little known fate of several thousand American, British, Australian, Canadian and other Allied civilians trapped in the Philippines in 1941 is the best of any account I have read. She draws us into camp, making the experience as real as if we were actually there. If I could own just one title about this experience, this book would be my choice. Clio Mathews was 28 when arrested by the Japanese military in Manila on 5 January 1941. She was placed in charge of a room of over 100 women prisoners, slept for 37 months on a hard table top crowded next to two other women, and did her best to maintain order in the crowded room. The story line describes vividly the weakness, fatigue, and memory loss that accompanied the final five months of virtual starvation from October 1944 to 3 February 1945 when the camp was finally liberated. It's good history and top-notch narrative.

This is one of those rare children's books that both touches the soul and informs the mind. It is the story of two men - first enemies, now friends - who build a bridge of forgiveness and understanding across the years. Told through letters between a grandmother and her granddaughter, readers are gently swept into a tale of reconciliation and hope. With a deft touch the author has presented a story for readers of any age. While a children's book in concept and delivery, it is also an adult book full of perception and promise. Any reader, young or old, will come away with a renewal of the human spirit and a hope for peace and understanding between humans as well as the countries in which they live. This will be a beautiful addition to any classroom, any home library and any study of war and its consequences. Run, do not walk, to obtain a copy of this book. Parents: be sure to share it with your kids; teachers: please share it with your students. There's much to admire and much to learn in these wonderfully rendered and textually rich pages. The Pearl Harbor Murders Review

On December 5, 1941, most Americans living on Hawaii knows that war with Japan is imminent, but they feel the islands are safe from an external attack. Most of the residences are more concerned with the loyalties of the local Japanese-American population, which is a third of the island and are afraid they will sabotage things on the islands.

Edgar Rice Burroughs and his adult son Hully enjoy their time together on Oahu. Ed agrees to arrange a meeting between Amerasian singer Pearl Harada and Army Intelligence Chief, Colonel Kendell Fielder. Pearl needs to persuade Kendell that she loves his son and wants his blessing for them to marry. The next morning, a scream awakens Ed who runs outside to see the corpse of Pearl. Unable to resist investigating her death, Ed begins making inquiries. He wonders if one of Pearl's string of ex-lovers killed her, Bill's outraged dad murdered her, or as the evidence begins to mount someone silenced her because she learned something about the event that is to occur the very next day?

Max Allan Collins is known for his award winning historical mysteries, especially those starring a famous author during a real life disaster. The current author-driven tale, THE PEARL HARBOR MURDERS, is an absolutely excellent blending of history and fiction into a powerful tale. Mr. Collins paints a picture of the islands just before and during the Japanese air attack while also providing a close look at the legendary writer. One day, a future author will star Mr. Collins solving a mystery while writing one of his fabulous novels for he has earned it with his achievements.

The Sino-Japanese War, 1937-41;: From Marco Polo Bridge to Pearl Harbor

This is generally an excellent account of the japanese and Chinese Nationalist military operations in China from 1937 until Pearl Harbor. It far exceeds any other English language account of the Sino Japanses war for this period. The battle descriptions are usually detailed, suprisingly clear and far more interesting than those in the droll and convoluted Japanese monogrpaphs and Nationalist official histories that serve as the major sources. Dorn does well in reconciling conflicts and discrepancies between the sources.
Several decades old the book is rather dated. It is unfortunate Dorn did not write s sequel covering the war from 1942-1945, while updating this work with a new edition. The account becomes sketchy in those few areas, where I suspect Dorn lacked reliable primary source material, but for the most part his book is enlightening.
